Saga of the Truck - Chapter 10

 That didn't take long!  Just a few days after making Big Gulp (2006 Ford F-550) available for sale, it is gone.  This little bit of info gets a chapter all its own.


Goodbye old friend.  Thanks for the adventures.  And good riddance to your wallet draining repairs.

Looking Ahead - Distant Destination

  Not much happening since last post other than routine life.  Doing things with the grandkids and old people doctor visits.   Except! We have been applying for winter volunteer jobs for 2024/2025 and have been officially accepted as campground hosts for Furnace Creek Campground, Death Valley.  My first communications for this position date back to about three months ago.  There was a lot of waiting between the first few communications but the pace has really picked up in the last three weeks.  We have had phone interviews and signed volunteer agreement forms via encrypted communications.  And as of six days ago of this writing the medium level background checks were begun and completed.  We were told that they could see we had many background checks showing in the system from our past positions and that facilitated rapid progression through the system for this one.  All we have to do now is show up for our October report date. Driving School and Good Eats

Its a good day to learn to back a trailer.  Windy as usual, but a nice day. And for all of Cyndee's buddies back at the pre-school who just can't imagine Cyndee driving a truck with a trailer, well, check this out: But you say; "Aw, she is just sitting in the truck yard.  Anybody can get their picture taken with it in park."  Okay, then, how about a video of her showing off her new backing skills.  Below is a video of backing the trailer in a straight line.  It is hard to see her in the shadow of the cab but she is doing this skill using the side-mirrors only, not looking back over her shoulder. Wildlife, Finally!

  Since arriving at Death Valley we have been blessed with phenomenal views of vast swaths of geology.  But other than the resident coyote pack and a couple of roadrunners, we have not seen any wildlife.  Can't say that now.  On our project day this week we were going to a distant attraction called The Charcoal Kilns.  By road it was almost a 60 mile drive with lots of elevation gain, from -191 feet below sea level to more than 5,000 feet above sea level.  Like the rest of the national park there are old abandoned mining operations all over the place.  But equipment is not the only thing that was abandoned when the mine played out.  A lot of the physical labor done to get to and from the mines as well as at the mines themselves was done by burros.  When the mines were abandoned they didn't bother to salvage their animals, they just turned them loose and never looked back.
