Earthquake!

 

Flashback!  October 24, 2024

Flat on my back getting a great night's sleep when suddenly I am jolted awake.  There are all kinds of sound, low frequency rumbles, bangs and rattles and accompanying all that, the bed was shaking, hard!

Totally startled and fully awake in an instant I try to get my feet on the floor to go see what was happening but the shaking bed had other plans.  Like a turtle on its back I rolled around with my legs and arms flailing in the air.  Then just as quickly as it started, it was over.

Looking at my phone it tells me that an earthquake had just occurred with its epicenter less than eight miles from us.  It was being called a "moderate" strength at a magnitude 4.7.  Nothing felt "moderate" about it but in the grand scheme of things I guess it was.  Other than a bottle shaken off a shelf at The Ranch there was no reported damage, except for maybe my underwear.

Later in the day news stories were emerging talking about an earthquake swarm that had been occurring in Death Valley for the past week.  In a four day span a total of 64 quakes ranging from 0.5, to the only one that we felt at 4.7 occurred.

Why I hadn't put this in my previous posts I don't know, but here it is now.

  October 2024 Okay, so the above pic is not our winter home, except in our dreams.  However it (The Biltmore) is just a stones throw away from where we are setting up housekeeping. As planned, our departure from Dumplin Valley RV Park in Kodak, TN was early with only about an hour-and-a-half traveling time to our destination in Candler, NC, a western suburb of Asheville.  But it wasn't quite as easy as it sounds.  The last four miles was like running a gauntlet. As soon as we took the I-40 exit to Candler a four mile obstacle course began.  The roads were just barely wide enough for two sedans to pass one another without taking a wheel off the edge of the pavement.  But that would be ill advised as steep and deep trenches lined both sides of the road.  Getting an eight foot wide and sixty foot long truck and trailer combination down these winding mountain roads was an altogether different drive.  Many of the turns in the road required me to pull ...

Driving School and Good Eats

Its a good day to learn to back a trailer.  Windy as usual, but a nice day. And for all of Cyndee's buddies back at the pre-school who just can't imagine Cyndee driving a truck with a trailer, well, check this out: But you say; "Aw, she is just sitting in the truck yard.  Anybody can get their picture taken with it in park."  Okay, then, how about a video of her showing off her new backing skills.  Below is a video of backing the trailer in a straight line.  It is hard to see her in the shadow of the cab but she is doing this skill using the side-mirrors only, not looking back over her shoulder. I have a video but Google is hosed up and won't load it.  I'll keep trying for a few days.  Check back later. 5 days later:  Okay, I give up.  Google just will not cooperate and let me have access to the page where I am supposed to "agree to terms & conditions".   After a hard days training at truck driving my folks took...

Looking Ahead - Distant Destination

  Not much happening since last post other than routine life.  Doing things with the grandkids and old people doctor visits.   Except! We have been applying for winter volunteer jobs for 2024/2025 and have been officially accepted as campground hosts for Furnace Creek Campground, Death Valley.  My first communications for this position date back to about three months ago.  There was a lot of waiting between the first few communications but the pace has really picked up in the last three weeks.  We have had phone interviews and signed volunteer agreement forms via encrypted communications.  And as of six days ago of this writing the medium level background checks were begun and completed.  We were told that they could see we had many background checks showing in the system from our past positions and that facilitated rapid progression through the system for this one.  All we have to do now is show up for our October report date.
