Kansas here we come.
We had company come by the camper last night while packing up to leave today. Can't tell you how nice it is to have friends just drop in; no phone call, no pre-arranged time, just knock-knock here I am. We have sorely missed that.
But it did extend finishing our departure preparations. Getting to bed was a little later than planned and hitting the floor as early this morning as I wanted to was a little tough. But we got up and got going. We were hitched up and at the dump station by 7:00 am. Strangely, we were the only ones left in the city park campground. Everybody had either bugged out last evening or really early this morning. It is the first time I ever remember seeing this campground empty.
Within a half-hour we were exiting the north side of Borger and on some great two-lane highways pointed in the general direction of Great Bend, KS. The cool wave of the past couple of days has broke hard and fast. It is in the low 80's with the sun just above the horizon. By the time we get to the Oklahoma Panhandle it is in the mid-90's and when we get fuel around noon it's 100 deg again.
I thought I had seen some pretty big wind farms (windmills for generating electricity) in Texas and Oklahoma, but Kansas has one that is massive. We literally drove for miles through this thing and when we were in the middle you could look in any direction and see these humongous turbines all the way out to the vanishing point.
Today the wind was our friend, it gave us a hefty push all day. Big Gulp had it pretty easy and we pulled into All Seasons RV Park by mid-afternoon. The campground host was great, she lead us to a pull-thru site and stayed around to see we got hooked up okay, or so I thought. Actually she was quite taken by our camper and was hanging around until we got the door open so she could look in and see what the inside was like. We went with it and invited her in and gave her the nickel tour. She had a good time and happily went on her way. We got the A/Cs running and headed back to town for the Applebee's that we saw as we drove through town.
After a good, fresh, grilled chicken and spinach salad we dropped in the Walmart and picked up a few things for breakfast. We'll get ourselves over to Junction City early tomorrow and the folks at the factory will start doing warranty work and upgrade installations. We will be hooked up in their parking lot and sleeping in the rig but we'll have to vacate during the day while they are working. Breakfast is about the only meal we will be eating at 'home' for a few days.
Even with a couple hours absence it was still plenty warm in the camper when we got back. We are sitting broadside to the afternoon sun and the A/Cs are laboring to get the temperature somewhere below stifling. We won't have any drop-in visitors tonight, I am hitting the rack early. The A/Cs will catch up eventually.
