Training Day

Our late departure from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and all the extra days we took on stopovers in Nevada, Arizona and Texas (mostly for maintenance work on the camper or truck) caused us to miss the first of two weeks of training at Big Bend.  But at least we were getting to school in time for the second week, which taught critical skills like how to write backcountry permits and operate the cash registers (which means opening, closing and doing daily audits of two register systems).

But that is just a small part school this week.  Today is billed as Interpretation 101 and 103.  Seriously, they are presenting this as if they are college courses.  In our previous job as campground hosts we worked for the fees division and got a total of about 3 hours of orientation, which consisted mostly of a driving tour and signing forms.  Here in Big Bend, as visitor center hosts we will be working for the Interpretive Division and evidently they take their orientation training of volunteers seriously.

We were going through lectures, doing group exercises and writing short essays.  Geez, I thought I was retired and finished with corporate-style all day meeting stuff.  But when it got down to it, it was everything we were going to need to get through the day at the busiest visitor center in the park.  Its all good.
